Death certificate copies calculator

Choose the state where the death happened and the number of copies. The calculator adds up the state’s own fees for each way of ordering.

How the total is worked out

Some states charge the same amount for every copy. Others charge less for each extra copy ordered at the same time, so ordering together costs less than ordering one at a time later. The calculator uses the fees the state publishes for each way of ordering: the first-copy fee, plus the extra-copy fee for each additional copy in the same order, or the per-copy fee times the number of copies.

Vendor processing fees and shipping are not included, because they depend on the options you pick; the state's page lists them.

How many to order

Banks, brokers, insurers, pension plans, the motor vehicle office and the probate court may each want a certified copy, and some keep it. Make a list of the accounts and agencies before you order. The guide How many death certificates do you need? walks through the usual list.

Who may order

Death certificates are restricted in most states to close family, the funeral director, legal representatives and people with a documented legal interest such as an executor. Check the state's rules with the eligibility checker or read who can order a death certificate before you order. If the funeral home is ordering the first copies for the family, ask how many it will order and add the rest to the same order to get the extra-copy price where the state offers one.
