VitalChek and other ordering services

Many states take online orders through a company they contract with, most often VitalChek. When the state names the vendor on its own website, ordering there is an official route: the state still issues the certificate, and the vendor adds its own fees. Sites the state does not name are not part of its process.

Official vendor vs look-alike site

A vendor the state names
Linked from the state’s own page, often described as its only authorized or contracted vendor. You pay the state fee plus the vendor’s fee and shipping.
A service the state does not name
Fills in the same application and sends it on for you, for its own fee.

Start from the state’s own website, linked on every state page here, and follow its link to order online.

Is the vendor worth it?

If a state’s mail service takes weeks and its vendor offers expedited processing and courier delivery, the vendor can save time. If the state has a same-day counter or local office near you, that is usually cheaper and faster. Compare in processing times and fees by state.
