Tools
Four small tools built on the same verified records as the state pages. They run in your browser, store nothing and order nothing.
- Which office has my recordState, record, year and county to the office that issues it.
- Eligibility and ID checkerWhether the state lets you order, and the ID it accepts.
- Checklist and cover sheetA printable mail checklist with the payee, address and fee.
- Death certificate copies calculatorThe cost of several copies with the state’s own fees.
Which tool to start with
Start with the office finder if you are not sure which office holds the record, for example when the event happened in New York City, many decades ago, or in a state where counties keep marriage records. Use the eligibility checker when the record is not your own. When you are ready to order by mail, the checklist puts the form, the ID rule, the fee, the payee and the address on one printable page. After a death, the copies calculator shows what several certified copies cost in the state where the death happened.
Each tool reads only the facts that are published on the state pages, with the same sources. If a state does not publish a figure, the tool leaves it out instead of guessing.
Where the numbers come from
Fees, times, eligibility rules, ID lists, payees, addresses and forms come from each state's own pages and forms, read twice and quoted. The tools show the state's own wording for rules, so you can see the condition attached to each one. When a state changes a fee, the tools use the new fee as soon as the state page does.
Privacy
The tools work in your browser with data files from this site. What you type is not sent to us or to any state office, and nothing is stored. To place an order, follow the link to the official office or the vendor the state names.
Prefer a table?
The same data is in two national tables you can sort and download: fees by state and processing times by state.
