Birth certificate for a home birth

When a baby is born at home or anywhere outside a hospital, the parents or the attendant must register the birth with the local or state registrar. Without registration there is no birth certificate to order later.

Social Security number

Easiest way to get a newborn's SSN: say yes when giving information for the birth certificate at the hospital.17 Applying later at an SSA office can be delayed while SSA verifies the birth certificate.17

If the birth was never registered

After the first year, the process becomes a delayed registration with more proof: see delayed birth certificates.
